When “after 10” could mean 3

We all have the same amount of time in a day. Time never stops. Time is interesting… especially when you are waiting.

If someone tells me “I’ll be there after 10” I tend to think it will be after 10 but fairly soon after 10. In my mind I’m actually thinking after 10 but before 11, because if you get here after 11, then it’s now after 11 and not after 10 as you said.

Another reason why I see it this way is because that’s what I would do if I told someone I’ll be there after 10.

Some people however don’t seem to get this concept and it’s annoying.

Today we’re expecting an electrician to come and do something at the house and we were told “I’ll be there after 10”.

Now this is someone who owns his own company but who seems to have no regard for time at all and we’ve experienced this from him before. With him, after 10 could literally mean anytime after 10… and I guess the way he sees it, even 3 pm is after 10. It’s even happened that tomorrow ends up being 6 days later.

After we followed up on “our after 10” sometime after 11, our “after 10” has now moved to “after 2”.

I totally understand that we can’t plan every minute or hour of our day to go as we expect. I understand that some jobs can take longer and you can end up being a bit later than you expected, but hours later to me is unacceptable especially without you contacting us and rescheduling.

What if I have somewhere to be after 12 or after 1? Should I be expected to cancel a whole day to make provision for someone who pitches up hours after the time they said they would be here?

Time flies when you’re having fun but when you are waiting, time takes an eternity.
